Our History
Founded in 1875 by visionary educator Dr. William Horizon, our university began as a small college dedicated to providing accessible education in the liberal arts and sciences.
Throughout the 20th century, the institution expanded its academic offerings, research capabilities, and campus facilities, evolving into a comprehensive university with a global reputation for excellence.
Today, Rhodes Island Academy stands as a leading institution of higher education, combining rich traditions with innovative approaches to address the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.
Founding of Horizon College with 120 students and 8 faculty members
Expansion to university status with the addition of graduate programs
Establishment of the Medical School and University Hospital
Centennial celebration and launch of the first international campus
Opening of the Science and Technology Research Center
Inauguration of the Global Innovation Campus and launch of the Horizon 2050 Strategic Plan
